Grandma Nell was my mother’s maternal grandmother. My mother lived with her in Los Angeles in the 1940’s. As my mother’s birthname was Mary Nell, Grandma Nell felt a special bond with her, which included teaching my mother her favorite songs, “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Amazing Grace.”
